Elephant’s Eye Hike 8 March 2025

We are going to hike Elephant’s Eye on 8 March.

Who can come?

You, yes you! Also, you can invite anyone! It’s not a tough hike at all, so even kids are welcome.

How long will it take?

We will arrive 13h30 to begin the hike at 14h latest. We should be back around 17h, and those that want to cool off by taking a dip in the Silvermine dam can then do so.

What will it cost?

Bring proof that you are an SA citizen and then it’s R42 per adult and R21 per child. CASH ONLY.

How tough / hectic is it?

It’s about as chill and easy as a two hour hike can be.

What should we bring?

Hiking clothes and shoes (obviously). Water bottle (0.5 or 1 liter), a hat, sunscreen.
You can also bring some cooldrink, cookies or other snacks, but that’s optional.
If a cooldown dip sounds appealing to you, bring a bathing suit and a towel.
Again: remember South African ID or driver’s license and cash for entry.

Who else is coming?

We are adding everyone who is invited to a WhatsApp group. You can check there. You can also invite people yourself. No real limit on how many can come.

What is the hike like?

It’s a relatively flat hike to a big cave (called Elephant’s eye). It’s about an hour to walk to there and an hour back. We’ll chill in the cave for a bit and drink something and munch some snacks while enjoying the view over the Southern Suburbs.

Where do we meet?

We meet at Silvermine nature reserve, at parking by the Silvermine Reservoir. This will be after the gate where you have to pay to get in, so you’ll need to budget some time for that. Try not to arrive at the gate to pay later than 13h40. Here is a pin to where we will meet:
