Boomslang Caves Hike - 12 Apr 2025

We are going to hike the Boomslang caves on the morning of 12 April.
Who can come?
You, yes you! You can also invite whoever you want. The hike is not very tough, but the initial climb is a bit hectic for little kids (that will need to be carried a lot of the way), and non-athletic people may not enjoy it, though they will probably manage in the end.
When and where do we meet?
We will meet at 12h30 at the start of the trail on Boyes Drive. More or less here:

But can we park there?
Yes you can. It’s free, and this early and out of holiday season there should be parking spots open. You may just have to walk 100m or so to the hike entrance. I should mention that Muizenburg is somewhat infamous for car break-ins and thefts and this is not the safest place to park… but I will risk it. I’ve done it many times and have not fallen victim yet. If you are more risk averse than me, I would suggest you try to instead get dropped off or Uber.
What will this cost?
It’s free. Can you believe that? A world class spelunking adventure and there’s no one even asking for money? This country rocks.
How will the hike unfold?
The plan is to meet at 12h30, then start walking the relatively steep ascent to the cave entrance. That will take 1-2 hours. At the entrance, those who are keen and crawl in and explore and then return. The rest can chill at the shady entrance and have some snacks while chatting.
We’ll give the spelunkers 45 mins to an hour to complete their adventure and then we’ll proceed to walk over the mountain to the adjacent valley and hike down through the beautiful Spesbona Forest trail. The hike dows should again take 1-2 hours. So we should be done between 17h and 18h.
What should we bring?
A fine question, that one.
The usual: comfortable hiking clothes, shoes and sunscreen. Hat is recommended. 1-2 liters of water. Something to snack on like a Jungle Bar or two or maybe some samies.
Then, very importantly:
If you want to go spelunking, bring a torch or a head lamp. Also know that you can get quite dirty spelunking, so don’t wear clothes that you care deeply for.
Erm, anything Else?
Sure. This is a very chill and surprisingly rewarding spelunk. Not a lot of bravery is required. You can learn more of the hike here:
